Quality of Life among the Elderly People with Insomnia Residents Geriatric Homes in Beni -Suef City

Abstract

- Background: Insomnia has severe negative impact on older adults' quality of life and daily functioning, affecting physical, social and psychological health.Aim: the study aims to assess quality of life among the elderly residents geriatric homes in Beni- Suef city . Design: A Descriptive research design was used in this study. Setting: This study was conducted in El-Khair and El-Baraka geriatric home – Young Muslim women geriatric home and Red Crescent geriatric home in Beni-Suef city. Sample: A convenience sample of 130 elderly with insomnia was selected. Tools: Two tools were used to collect data, 1st tool: Structured interviewing questionnaire, elderly knowledge regarding insomnia and elderly reported practices regarding insomnia. 2nd tool: Quality of life tool for elders with insomnia. Results: Less than to thirds of the study elderly had poor levels total knowledge regarding insomnia. While more than a quarter of them had averge knowledge and more than tenth had good total knowledge. More than three quarters of study the eldary has unsatisfactory level of total repoted practices regading insomnia. Less than two thirds of the studies elderly people has high effect of insomnia on their over all quality of life. Conclusion: There was a highly statistical significant positive correlation between total knowledge scores and total reported practices scores. Recommendations: Design education program for elder about the factors associated with insomnia to enhanced sleep and mange associated sign and symptoms Key words: Elderly People, Geriatric homes, Insomnia, Quality of life
